Leeds is recognised as the regional capital of Yorkshire and its cultural offerings reflect this status. It is the only UK city outside London to have both its own opera (Opera North) and its own ballet (Northern Ballet) companies. These companies are based at the Grand Theatre which is currently undergoing refurbishment. The West Yorkshire Playhouse comprises two theatres, several rehearsal rooms and catering facilities, and offers a wide range of local and national productions. A brand new theatre, the Carriageworks, opened in 2005 and presents plays, musicals and youth theatre.
The City Art Galley holds the best collection of 20th century British art outside London and incorporates a craft and design gallery. A new focal point for the city’s visual art scene is the Patrick Studios project, a complex of 28 studios dedicated to the nurturing of emerging artists.
An international film festival is held in October each year.
